Rugby Smart is a compulsory course for all coaches that have been directed from the NZRU, coaching from Secondary School to Clubs and representative teams.

Small Blacks
Small Black courses are a compulsory course directed by the New Zealand Rugby Union, a rugby smart component will be covered also. This course will enable all coaches across Otago with the focus of consistency of coaching, rules and player welfare and skill development.
The three small blacks grade levels are:
Beginning Rugby (under 6 and under 7)
Learning Rugby (under 8, 9 and 10)
Playing Rugby (under 11, 12 and 13)

Front Row Factory’s
(Rugby clubs and secondary schools)
This course is designed to educate and up-skill coaches at club level and secondary school level for all front rowers. The course will provide the tools to deliver and ensure their front row squad members understand and maintain a safe environment while using the correct technique in the rugby environment

Coaching for Teenage School Rugby
(Secondary Schools)
This course provides coaches with the basic skills for coaching rugby and helping players to play the game with satisfaction, skill and development.
It explains and demonstrates the skills of the game and requires course applicants to apply these skills so they in turn can coach players to employ them safely and successfully. Practical information on planning and management supports this on field knowledge. This course will give participants the knowledge and skills they need to coach teenage players in the game of rugby.

Developing Rugby Coaches
Throughout out Rugby Development New Zealand coaches have had to be innovative and constantly seek to find better ways of preparing teams in order to remain competitive. The Development Rugby Coaches Course has been developed to provide coaches with a resource covering all the sports generic facets of the game of rugby. The course is not specifically targeted towards beginner coaches or coaches of younger players. It is a comprehensive course focusing on Key Factor Analysis of the Skills of Rugby Union as well as providing basic information in the sport generic area such as Role of the Coach, Sport Psychology, Communication, Physical Preparation, Growth and Development skills, Analysis and Teaching a skill, and so has real value to coaches. Accreditation will only be awarded to coaches who complete the assessment requirements of the completed course.
