Primary & Rippa Rugby

Rippa Rugby

Rippa rugby is a game that New Zealand Rugby Football Union introduced to young rugby players in 2003. It is a safe, non-contact, easy-to-play game for both boys and girls alike. It is a fun fast exciting game.

It is a game similar to touch rugby but involves ripping tags instead of touching the ball carrier; this makes it a more enjoyable and even sport for all to play. For the younger players it is great as it gives them something physical to chase.

This game was designed to make it easy to understand and play, it is a game that you can change to suit the group you have.

Rippa rugby involves such skills as:
·         Ball handling skills- catching, passing and running with ball
·         Running skills (evasion) –looking for space
·         Team Work – between 6 to 10 players per team
·         Communication
·         Chasing and ripping tags

The objective of the game is to score a try by placing the ball over the opposition’s try line. To stop the opposition from scoring you must rip the flag from the belt of the ball carrier. Once you have made six rips it is then a handover. Once a player is ripped they must offload/pass the ball within 3 steps of being ripped. This creates a non-stop game once the players understand the rules. Normal rugby rules apply with regards to no forward passes and knock on. The field size can vary depending on number of players.
