Secondary School Competition

PGG-Wrightson Secondary School Rugby is played by U14 through U18 players on a provincial wide basis. This also includes North Otago Schools in most grades. Teams come primarily from Secondary Schools but there are also some club teams’ involved.

Travel takes teams from Dunedin to Oamaru and Queenstown and anywhere in between on a weekly basis.

In fact, our region and travel requirements are the largest in the country for weekly competition for Secondary School students. The OtagoSecondary school rugby council which administers rugby for our region is eternally grateful to the financial assistance put towards travel by PGG-Wrightson.

Teams play in the following grades:

Under18

Under16

Under15

Under14

Juniors (combination of U14 & U15 for smaller schools)

Colts (combination of U16 & U17, for smaller clubs and schools)

All grades are competitive with semi-finals and finals being played in August of each year. Where numbers permit, rugby is played in local competitions to minimise travel requirements. This is for part of the season as eventually we work towards identifying Otago's top teams in all age grades.

All schools have a RAS (Rugby Administrator in Schools) who coordinates the delivery of rugby within the school/club. Their purpose is to act as a link between schools, clubs and the ORFU. Some of their duties include; registrations, coach, management and player identification, ensuring players and coaches are aware of coaching courses and representative opportunities and ensuring there is a link between clubs and schools.
