Otago Round 3 v Wellington |
 |
Otago Head Coach Mark Brown has named his side to play against Wellington in the third round of the Bunnings Warehouse NPC this Sunday 17th August, 2:05pm in Porirua, Wellington, where they will play for the Mike Gibson Memorial Trophy. Gibson was a centre and wing who played for both Wellington and Otago in the 1980s. He played three seasons for Otago, and one full season in Wellington and for the Lions before he was diagnosed with leukaemia and he passed away in 1988, age 27.
In his honour, Gibson’s Bay of Plenty-based family commissioned a trophy to be played annually between Wellington and Otago. The trophy was carved by Winiata Tapsell, a grandson of Winiata Tapsell who played for New Zealand Maori against the Springboks in 1921.
A relatively unchanged team, this week sees Christian Lio- Willie return to the line-up and Benjamin Lopas set to play his Blazer game for the province.
Sam Gilbert leads the team as Captain, with support from Lio- Willie in the VC role.

Year 8 Festival - Dunedin |
On Saturday 9 August the second round of the Y8 Festival was held at Hancock Park in Dunedin. While the weather certainly reminded us that Rugby is a winter sport - all the teams involved had a fantastic day! We even had some special guests from the Otago Spirit and NPC teams on the BBQ. 10 teams from across the Otago Province played some great rugby throughout the day, and it was a excellent opportunity for the kids to play with players from other clubs and experience new coaches! A huge thank you to all the families, coaches, and volunteers who made this festival happen! |
