Otago Rugby is proud to announce a new partnership with Port Otago, marking the beginning of an exciting relationship focused on looking after our junior rugby players and setting them up for a safe and enjoyable season ahead.
Thanks to this partnership, mouthguards will be provided to junior rugby players right across the province before the 2026 season gets underway. It’s a simple initiative with a big impact, helping young players form good safety habits from the very start of their rugby journey.
Both Otago Rugby and Port Otago see huge value in backing junior rugby and making sure kids have the right gear to play the game safely while having fun with their mates.
Port Otago Chief Executive Kevin Winders says the initiative is a natural fit for the organisation’s strong connection to the local community.
“Many of us at Port Otago are known for cheering on our local rugby teams – from the juniors and high-school level, through to Otago and the Highlanders. When Otago Rugby approached us about sponsoring mouthguards for the junior players, we thought it was an excellent safety initiative and particularly liked that it benefited young people getting out and enjoying their sport. Many of our kaimahi have children who play rugby, so it’s also a great way to support them and our wider community.”
Otago Rugby Community Manager Warren Kearney champions the positive impact the initiative will have for young players.
“We are grateful to Port Otago for supporting our junior rugby players. Helping young players get into the habit of wearing mouthguards early on is an important part of keeping them safe on the field and putting player welfare first.”
Otago Rugby looks forward to working alongside Port Otago to make sure junior rugby in Otago continues to be a positive experience for players and their whānau.
